A Green Cat and Other Plays by Elise Wilk at the Belgrade Book Fair
The second book of WEDA project was present at the joint stand of Silver Tree and Treći Trg publishers in the first days of the 66th International Book Fair in Belgrade, which took place from October 21 to October 29, 2023. Serbian readers were acquainted with the multi-awarded young Romanian playwright Elise Wilk and her book A Green Cat and Other Plays.
Elise Wilk is one of the most accomplished playwrights of the younger generation in Romania. She currently teaches screenwriting at the University of Arts in Targu Mures, where she finished her PhD with the topic of Youth Theater in Romania.
The book A Green Cat and Other Plays contains four plays – A Green Cat, The Crocodile, Room 701, Paper Airplanes – for which the author won the Irish Embassy Award for Young Playwrights in 2013, the Romanian Drama Award in 2015 and the National Monodrama Award in 2017 .
Silver Tree promoted the project WEDA – What Europe Dreams About at the joint stand with the publisher Treći Trg, through visuals, publications and conversations with visitors. This project promotes drama as an endangered genre for the modern readers, as well as languages that are less represented in the overall European heritage.
The visitors of the stand who follow contemporary drama enthusiastically welcomed this kind of publishing venture, especially since it included translations of contemporary authors almost unknown to the local readers.
Further publications of plays in 2024 have also been announced, and readers were introduced to the online presentation of the WEDA project, where they can get detailed information about publications, authors and translators, as well as follow announcements of future events within the project – promotions, workshops and the Festival of drama that is planned in the end of 2024.
